Zoster-Associated Pain

In a 2004 study designed to describe the acute pain of zoster and assess its impact on zoster patients (n=110)8:

  • 45% reported that they experienced pain every day.8
  • 42% reported that zoster-associated pain was “horrible” or “excruciating.”8

Zoster—much more than a rash

Zoster is characterized by a unilateral, painful, blistering rash with a dermatomal distribution.

Nerve pain is a potentially severe symptom of zoster.7—9 It can occur before, during and after the rash.

In a different study of people 65 years of age and older, more than two thirds of subjects reported that their worst postherpetic neuralgia pain was moderate or severe.11
